Davenport University announces the addition of women’s wrestling program in 2020-21

GRAND RAPIDS, Mich.  - Davenport University has announced the addition of women’s wrestling as a program that will start competing during the 2020-21 school year. The current head coach of the men’s wrestling program, Jamie Boyd, will also lead the women’s program.

“As we assessed the athletic landscape in our region, we noticed a consistent uptick of interest in women’s wrestling,” said Paul Lowden, executive director of intercollegiate athletics. “We have continued to gauge the growth of women’s wrestling in our area, which included the addition of the first Michigan High School Girls Wrestling Finals. With the addition of a collegiate women’s wrestling program at Davenport, we feel that we can offer a unique opportunity for females to extend their wrestling careers while achieving their academic goals.” 

The women’s wrestling program will compete under the governing body of the Women’s Collegiate Wrestling Association (WCWA). The WCWA currently as a membership of 38 collegiate programs.
The program will follow eligibility rules similar to the NCAA and NAIA programs.

Davenport University will be the second institution in the state of Michigan to join the WCWA. The team will compete in 10 different weight classes and use international freestyle rules during competition. Members of the WCWA can also compete in USAW Senior and Jr. Fila events.

“I believe it is a tremendous step for this University in showing its support for the sport of wrestling by establishing a women’s program in 2020,” said Boyd. “The state of Michigan alone has an abundance of highly-talented female wrestlers that will now have the opportunity to continue their wrestling careers while obtaining a great education. I am very excited about building the foundation for the women’s program and looking forward to our first season.”

ESU Adds Women’s Wrestling as Intercollegiate Sport for 2019-2020 Season

East Stroudsburg University of Pennsylvania (ESU) has announced that they will be adding Women’s Wrestling as an intercollegiate sport for the 2019-2020 season. ESU will become the third college or university in the state of Pennsylvania (Gannon and Delaware Valley) to offer Women’s Collegiate Wrestling. East Stroudsburg University is an NCAA Division II institution but the Warriors women’s wrestlers will compete in the Women’s Collegiate Wrestling Association (WCWA).

The WCWA now has over 50 collegiate programs that are either currently competing or have made the commitment to begin competition in the 2019-2020 season. The split between NCAA and NAIA institutions is about even but the growth between the two have been so healthy that the NAIA has sanctioned their own championship and the NCAA is considering it for emerging sport status. The addition of ESU helps women’s wrestling inch closer to a number the NCAA wants to see before making women’s wrestling an NCAA sanctioned sport.

In the meantime, Coach Anibal Nieves who is no stranger to women’s wrestling will look to begin recruiting immediately. Coach Nieves was the Women’s Wrestling coach at Springfield Tech Community College in Connecticut before making the move to the Poconos to take over the Warriors men’s program.

According to ScholarshipStats, in-state tuition at East Stroudsburg is listed at $9,968 and $21,110 for out-of-state tuition. The average female scholarship is listed at $2,180. SAT and ACT Scores for admitted students range from 420 to 540 on the SAT Math section and 19 to 24 composite on the ACT. Located in Northeast Pennsylvania and right off of Route 80, ESU will be a likely destination for many girls wrestlers in the tri-state area. ESU also has seen some facilities renovations which will make it an even more attractive draw.
